“Nature herself appointed that nothing great is to be accomplished quickly, and has ordained that difficulty should precede every work of excellence.”
“It goes a long way back, some twenty years. All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. I accepted their answers, too, through they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory. I was naïve.” --Ralph Ellison’s Battle Royal
It is imperative that you examine what you believe to be true. Bring your doubts and questions into the light. Know yourself!
The goal of spiritual development is not to change your beliefs. It is to understand them, and to be able to stand confident in them. If fact, I am quite positive that I don’t want you to change your mind because of what you read here!
Read these quotations, and consider your reaction:
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you really knew Me, you would know My Father as well. From now on,
you do know Him and have seen Him.’” John 14:6-7
“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in Me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it.” John 14:12-14
“If you love Me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you will know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I am in you. Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love Him and show Myself to him.” John 14:15-21, emphasis added
Answered prayers are terrific … and terrifying, because they demand responsibility—yours! All of our expectations suddenly become questions. And If YHWH really isn’t interested in what’s going on down here, then there really is nothing new under the sun, and it would be pointless for you to try to change anything. You may as well resign yourself to life’s harsh sting. Fair’s fair, and there’s nothing fair about life. It’s all do or die, so what’s the point?
The point is that you don’t really know the creative force who does hear and act on your behalf. YHWH knows that the sky’s the limit. He created the universe. The truth is that possibility is far more frightening than impossibility, and freedom is more terrifying than any prison. If you really do want communion with the God of the universe, then He will be calling you into action on what you’ve abandoned as impossible childhood dreams. What are you going to do about that?
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:18-19
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10
Isn’t my life full enough already? Why did Jesus say this? Who is the thief and what’s he stolen? What’s missing?
Jehovah-Jireh, LORD of provision, please open my heart to Yours. Guide me on the path to knowing You and this life You offer. I need wisdom and understanding to experience the full extent of Your love, and the truth that comes with a sensitivity to Your Spirit. I want to experience life to the full.
Does it bother you to read these verses, or to pray this prayer? Is the thought of ‘Lord’ or ‘Jesus Christ’ disconcerting for you? Unload it into your journal. Spend as long as you need exploring your understanding and expectations. You are not being told to believe anything, but to question everything. You are invited to argue all of it, but at the same time, it’s imperative to seek the truth and listen for the answers. And don’t look for the response to come from the usual authorities.
“The longest-lived and the shortest-lived man,
When they come to die, lose one and the same thing.” Marcus Aurelius
Note: YHWH, “the four consonants standing for the ancient name of God commonly referred to as Jehovah or Yehweh. Since it was considered too sacred a name to pronounce, Adonai (“my Lord”) was substituted when the Scripture was read aloud.” Today’s Dictionary of the Bible; compiled by T A Bryant, Bethany House publishers, Minneapolis, MN 1982, pg 658. I’ve chosen this nomenclature to help us get over any past history of who we think this god might be. He’s greater than names can claim, and His identity is worth seeking.
